108 Contemplations

108 Contemplations.jpg

108 Contemplations is an expression of solidarity. Each contemplation, singular in color and form, when set alongside 107 other equally unique and beautiful beings, affirms a visual narrative of collective power. This world that we share, oh, it is rough. The combined stressors of climate catastrophe, loss of biodiversity, and rise of authoritarianism easily overwhelms. My head and heart are heavy with the suffering of so many beings. But here we are, at this time, on this earth. Monica Roa (2025) put into words what has been rattling around in my body. She writes, Our response to authoritarianism and individualism cannot be limited to resistance. We must activate our collective power…dar[ing] to imagine something better: a society where well-being is not a privilege for a few, but the certainty that each person’s well-being depends on the well-being of all…. Let’s make visible the environmental and social interdependence that sustains us. Let’s tell stories of collective well-being. Let’s build community. Let’s speak of the State and its institutions as an organized system of mutual care. Let’s practice solidarity, cooperation, and reciprocity. Let’s bring these narratives to life and use our narrative power to create an ever-expanding “us.” The Project On May 11, 2025, I released the 108 contemplations into the world. Each contemplation was sold for $20 (inclusive of shipping and tax). All proceeds were split equally between the Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico, the largest non-profit dedicated to solving food insecurity in the state, and ABQ+ Community Fund, a local fund created by and for queer and trans BIPOC people living in the wider Albuquerque community in need of financial and other kinds of support. I chose these two organizations specifically because they are working to alleviate suffering of some of the most vulnerable people in my wider community. The contemplations sold out in less than a week. Thirty-five people participated, each purchasing 1-9 contemplations. Like stones skipping across a pond and dandelion seeds floating on air, I know each contemplation has found its place and ripples this narrative of interbeing and possibility outward. Thank you all.
