Heads: Portraits of Contemplation

I started with heads.  It was after several brain surgeries.  I needed a way to engage myself, and writing—the medium I was used to—hurt.  One of the first was a self-portrait.  On top, holes ran along the curve of my scar, and deep gauges sat behind my eyes, all the way through the clay.

In later heads, I channeled the serenity I didn’t feel inside into their expressions. Those later heads are pictured here and were first shown at The Hardwood Art Center's Surface: Emerging Artists of New Mexico 2015, Albuquerque, NM.

Materials: earthenware clay, oil paint, metallic pigment.
